The choice between global shutter and rolling shutter is one of the most important decisions in camera module selection — and it directly affects whether your images are usable for your application. This article explains the technical differences, the trade-offs, and when to choose each.
What is rolling shutter?
Rolling shutter means the sensor reads pixels row by row, top to bottom. Each row is exposed at a slightly different time. If the subject moves during the readout, different rows capture the subject at different positions — causing distortion.
Common artifacts:
- Jello effect: Straight lines appear wavy when the camera or subject moves
- Skew: Fast-moving objects appear to lean in the direction of motion
- Partial exposure: Flash photography can capture only part of the frame
What is global shutter?
Global shutter exposes all pixels simultaneously and reads them out together. There is no temporal offset between rows. The entire frame captures a single moment in time — no motion artifacts, no jello effect.
Global shutter is essential for:

- Rotating parts measurement
- Drone and aerial imaging with vibration

The trade-off: why not always use global shutter?
Global shutter sensors have historically been more expensive and lower resolution than rolling shutter sensors. The technical reasons:

- Stationary or slow-moving subjects (< 0.5 m/s)
- Document scanning and OCR
- Microscopy and medical imaging
- Video conferencing and pro AV
- Surveillance of non-fast-moving targets
- Applications with controlled lighting and no vibration
If your subject doesn't move during the frame readout time (typically 1/30 to 1/60 second), rolling shutter artifacts are invisible.
When you must use global shutter
Global shutter is non-negotiable for:
- Conveyor inspection: Products moving at 0.5+ m/s will show skew with rolling shutter
- Rotating parts: Spinning components look distorted with rolling shutter
- Flash/strobe imaging: Rolling shutter can't sync with fast strobes
- Vibration environments: Drone, vehicle-mounted or handheld industrial use
- 3D structured light: Pattern projection requires simultaneous capture
Practical recommendation
For most B2B camera module applications, the decision tree is:
- Does the subject move faster than 0.5 m/s? → Global shutter required
- Do you need 4K resolution? → Likely rolling shutter (4K global shutter is rare and expensive)
- Is this for machine vision / measurement? → Global shutter preferred for accuracy
- Is this for visual inspection only? → Rolling shutter is fine if subject is slow
- Budget constrained? → Rolling shutter + good lighting is better than no camera
Bottom line: Choose global shutter when motion is involved. Choose rolling shutter when resolution or budget matters more. The best solution sometimes uses both: a rolling shutter 4K module for overview, plus a global shutter 2MP module for high-speed detail capture.
